Common Light Therapy Questions
What is light therapy?
The human body is full of non-visual photoreceptors from head to toe, each sensitive to different bands of light, all playing a crucial roll in overall health and wellness from cellular energy to circadian rhythm correction. Chroma devices are designed to target these systems for high leverage results.
What are Opsins and why do they matter for health?
Opsins are a class of non-visual photoreceptors that play crucial roles in various physiological processes, including skin health, mood regulation, and possibly even metabolic functions. By incorporating cyan and violet light into some of our devices, we aim to activate these opsins, tapping into deeper levels of physiological regulation and health enhancement.
Can Photobiomodulation Help Me With XYZ...?
We're not doctors and can't give medical advice. That said, light therapy has been studied to be effective for everything from skin health, to memory, to bone repair, cancer outcomes, wound healing, eye disorders, guy health, and even sleep quality. This spreadsheet is an excellent resource to search and see if your condition has potential to be improved with light.
Who Is Behind Chroma?
Our founder is Michael Chapiro, a NASA, NSF, and Air Force funded engineer. He built the prototypes of our devices for himself first and foremost many years before deciding to make them available to the public.
The Devices Look Different Than Photos I've Seen Online
Unlike other companies who use off the shelf hardware, we custom build all of our high power devices. We are constantly improving and iterating on our devices. While we will never release a device that doesn't meet our high standards, we're known to make improvements on almost every batch, because of this, the images of our devices can fall out of date quickly. If you have any questions about your device, please contact us at hello@getchroma.co
Is Dr. Jack Kruse Part Of Chroma?
No. While we take input from Dr. Jack in the design of our devices, Dr. Jack Kruse is not directly associated with Chroma.
What does red light therapy actually do?
The method of action of red/nir/light therapy is non-thermal, meaning the photons interact directly with the mitochondria and other photon receptive structures known as Opsins influencing or directly controlling a very wide range of cellular processes in the body.

Is 10 mins of red light therapy enough?
Understanding the optimal duration for red light therapy (RLT) depends greatly on the specific device you're using and the power it delivers. With our high-power devices like the Ironforge and Lux Vital, the intensity of the light means that even a shorter exposure, ranging from 30 seconds to a few minutes, can deliver a substantial dose of therapeutic light to your targeted area.
The common recommendation of 10 minutes for red light therapy is a general guideline that can vary based on the device’s power density and the distance from the light source. Our devices are designed to provide a more concentrated form of therapy, meaning that in many cases, you can achieve the desired biological effects in less time compared to lower-power units. For full body treatment, a 10 minute session spread over your entire body may be perfect.
For targeted treatments with our high power devices, such as addressing specific muscle soreness or joint pain, a shorter duration with our devices can be very effective. All this said, more isn't always better, as with any new stimuli, start small and work up to a dose that your body responds to well.
While our high power devices are best for shorter sessions, our Sky Portal devices are designed for safe all day use.
Do you wear clothes during red light therapy?
During red light therapy (RLT) sessions, it’s generally recommended to expose the skin area you wish to treat directly to the light, which usually means removing clothing from that specific part of the body. While some light will make it through thin clothing, direct exposure ensures that the therapeutic light wavelengths penetrate the skin and underlying tissues effectively, maximizing the treatment's benefits. For example, if you're using our Ironforge or Lux Vital device for joint pain in your knee, you would ideally have the knee area uncovered during the therapy session.
How long does it take to see results from red light therapy?
The timeline for seeing results from red light therapy (RLT) can vary depending on the individual's condition, the specific treatment goals, and the device used. Some of our users report feeling near-immediate relief, specially in terms of reduced inflammation and pain, while others see relief after a few sessions. Generally, for skin-related outcomes such as improved texture and healing, or for deeper tissue effects like muscle recovery and joint health, noticeable results may emerge after consistent use over a period of two to six weeks. The key to effective RLT is regular and correct usage, following the guidelines specific to your device. With our devices designed for efficiency and potency, users might experience quicker onset of benefits. It's important to track changes and consult with healthcare professionals to optimize your red light therapy regimen for the best outcomes.
What Our Customers Say
Greyson Q.
Ironforge
I am blown away by this device, I have the power of a panel in something that fits in my One-Bag. I can both spot treat and radiate my whole body with the same unit. I also really like the utilitarian design. It was designed with no frills but still looks esthetic. The newest version with multiple wavelengths provides a really wide range. Chroma has earned themselves a life-time customer and I'd like to give a special shout out to Matt for being so responsive, knowledgeable and helpful.

Ironforge
The power to reduce inflammation all in the palm of your hands. I have a 6 panel, full body system from one of the major light panel companies and the Ironforge smokes it in quality and power. Will be purchasing another shortly.

Sky Portal
I like it, and I feel like (struggling for a good way to collect data on this) it helps quite a bit. When I leave it on for the whole day, it definitely changes how I feel in the evening, and its effect is much “softer” than having a conventional bulb scorching my eyes all day.

Lux Vital
I have had my device for a short period, but wow. I have had many other devices/panels, but none compare to the Chroma brand! I live in Michigan, and the winters are long; I do get up to see the sunrise, but the addition of the device really has made a difference. I have a lot of energy, and my labs have improved!
